If you want the security of a hospital while maintaining control over how you will be allowed to birth, a doula might be the best choice for you.

A birth doula’s role is to help you have the birth you want. Whether you want to go all natural with no interventions or drugs, or if you would prefer a scheduled C-section, a doula will help make your wishes know to the hospital staff. She can explain to you the procedures and interventions that are offered so you are able to make an informed choice about which ones you are willing to accept.

It has been proven that the presence of a doula at a birth can help the laboring woman in the following ways:

  • *26% less likely to give birth via cesarean section
  • *41% less likely to give birth with vacuum extractor or forceps
  • *28% less likely to use any analgesia or anesthesia
  • *33% less likely to be dissatisfied or negatively rate their birth experience

There are two types of doula care – birth and postpartum Both types of care focus on "mothering the mother." A birth doula will be with a woman through labor and birth and the first hours after the baby is born. A postpartum doula will help the family settle into their new life after the addition of a new member.

A postpartum doula can help you transition into your new roles and interactions as a family. Having a postpartum plan will help your recovery time and allow you to focus on your new baby. You might contract for help with household chores, sibling care or parenting tips and support. The goal is to help you become confident, competent and secure in your roles as new parents.
